Ions, channels and membrane are magnified for viewing; ion counts are illustrative.
The pulse travels along the axon to the cross section before the channels open.
Preparing the simulation…
Model time (ms); motion is slowed for observation.
Model notes
A simplified Hodgkin–Huxley model of action potentials and Na⁺/K⁺ channels; its resting potential is −65 mV (about −70 mV in many neurons). It does not represent every type of neuron.
The pulse travels along the axon; ions cross the membrane locally. The membrane colour shows the potential: blue when the inside is negative, red when it is positive. Displayed ion counts, sizes and speed are not to scale.
Concentrations follow the model and remain synchronized with ion motion; no ion-pump mechanism is simulated here.
The chart shows membrane potential against model time. Replay restores recorded states; it does not reverse biological processes.
